GTO: Gaijin Teacher OHMYGOD! Issue #2
Useful Vocab:
–GAIJIN– Derogatory (usually) slang term used by Japanese people in reference to non-Japanese.
–Enjo Kosai– “Compensated Dating” or under age prostitution which is, despite what you might have heard, still illegal in Japan.
Dude…your a fucking genius by the way. One of the coolest and original blogs I have seen period!
Coming from you, big compliment. Thanks man.
That chick is hot.
Well done again.
Cheers yet again.
Jermain (germain?) Great stuff, I’m awaiting part 3 with bated breath.
Oh…Jermain is coming Alex…he’s coming.
Please continue this series. It needs to be done.
I will fight the good fight.
Okay, I feel like an idiot for even asking this here, but, you happened to post this exactly one week before I showed up in Japan to start as a gaijn English instructor and the timing is kind of eerie so… well my actual issue is: I’ve got a place that wants to hire me but they can’t because I didn’t graduate college. Do YOU, and I assume you do just because you made a funny web comic, KNOW of any loopholes around the whole “gaijins are only allowed to get work visas for teaching if they have college degrees” thing? You seem like someone who is not confounded by conventional rules, so I need to ask. P.S. I have been training for a month and I honestly don’t want to have sex with students. But I really do need a visa. What can I do, with my uneducated ass?
Hmmm….Most of the people I know that work in the English industry that didn’t go to university have one of two cards up their sleeves. Either a: they married a Japanese national hence the visa is taken care of, or b: they got their degree from, how shall we say, an educational institution that helps “students” get “degrees” without all the traditional obstacles (such as attending classes, or studying etc). The latter of the two I have little info about because frankly the people I suspect of having done this prefer not to discuss it.
Hmm, I’m working on the marrying a national angle, but I’ll also look into this quasi-degree thing since that seems like a better bet for me. Thanks for the help, if I’m still here in three months I’ll check back GTO. If I’m back in America then I’ll simply be too bitter.
Feel like I should go ahead and shoot the shit- if I, with absolutely no teaching xp of any sort, possess the golden wonka ticket aka a BA of sorts, how much of a walk in the park would landing an ALT job be in Tokyo area? Icing on the cake would be middle or high school, and a govt. or a private school, not one of those eikawas; and is there ANY chance they could officially invite me to work from overseas? I’d hate to haul my ass over there on a one-way only to find myself sol and with tourist visa expiring. Much obliged for some insight, cheers.
A lot of people have hit us up with questions like this. From your home country look into JET. The program the government has here. After that it’s hit and miss. If you like adventure get a ticket and come over. Nothing motivates like total pending failure.
